Shortridge High School’s SHINE Project: A Bright Idea to Stop Youth Violence!

At Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, students have embraced a powerful initiative called the SHINE Project, designed to tackle the serious issue of youth violence. With a mission to create safe spaces, this program lets teens unwind, socialize, and enjoy activities like open mic nights and tailgates. As 17-year-old Oliver Martinez-Tome put it, it’s all about having a place where they can feel safe while being around friends. Now that sounds like a refreshing change from scrolling through social media drama!
What’s even more impressive? Since SHINE kicked off last August, suspension rates at the school have dropped by 50%! Talk about a win-win for student morale and safety! Social worker Chelsea English, the brain behind the program, is already dreaming big, hoping to expand its reach across all Indianapolis Public Schools. Can you imagine a city where every high school has a program like this? Now that’s a vision worth supporting.
This project proves that young voices can lead the charge against issues that matter most to them, and it’s a reminder that community initiatives can be key in preventing violence before it starts. What’s your take? If you could launch a program at your school or in your community to tackle any issue you care about, what would it be and why? Let’s hear your ideas!
